Renee Walker is a former CTU agent who returns in season 8, struggling to keep her life together. Jack Bauer worries that she has become a danger to herself and others. She helps Jack go undercover to force the cooperation of Sergei Bazhaev's mob family in acquiring nuclear rods. After the treaty signing, Jack and Renee return to his apartment where they have a romantic encounter. However, a Russian assassin follows them there and fires through the windows. Renee is hit and dies on arrival at the hospital. Jack vows to avenge her death and bring everyone involved in the conspiracy and cover-up to justice. Her death sets off Jack's rampage against the Russian government members responsible for the conspiracy.

In Their Own Story

After the nuclear crisis is averted and President Hassan is assassinated, Jack and Renee return to his apartment. They have a romantic encounter, but a Russian assassin follows them and fires through the windows to tie up loose ends. Renee is hit, and a frantic race ensues as Jack rushes her to the hospital. She dies on arrival. Jack then vows to avenge her death and bring everyone involved in the conspiracy and cover-up to justice. He learns that the Russian government are behind everything, as they see the treaty as a threat to their influence in the world and supported and funded Mehran's group to destroy the peace process. Jack kills Pavel Tokarev, the assassin who killed Renee.
